Ayele Bekerie, visiting assistant professor at the Africana Studies and Research Center, has won the 1998 African Heritage Studies Association Award (AHSA) for his book Ethiopic, An African Writing System: Its History and Principles, published in 1997 by Red Sea Press. The award was given at the 30th annual conference of the ASHA, which was held in New Orleans in March.

The Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC) has honored Paul Eshelman, associate professor of design and environmental analysis, by naming him a fellow of the organization at its annual conference in New York City recently. Only 30 IDEC members have become fellows in the past 20 years. Cited for leadership and service to the organization and discipline, Eshelman served as editor of the Journal of Interior Design (1991-94) and proposed changes in title, format, structure, support and overall design which raised the quality and visibility of the only research journal dedicated to the discipline of interior design. Eshelman's other leadership roles include that of vice president (1989-91), corresponding secretary (1985-89), board member (1985-91), IDEC record editor (1985-89), and chair of the Research Committee (1984-85), to name a few.

Susan K. Brown, associate professor and director of the apple breeding program in the Department of Horticultural Sciences at the Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva, was honored with the Outstanding Research Award of the New York Farmers Club at a black tie dinner on April 14 at the Union Club in New York City. Brown was accompanied by Daryl B. Lund, the Ronald P. Lynch Dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. "Dr. Brown was very gracious in receiving the Outstanding Research medal and identified how important the Farmers Club's contributions are for student support at CALS," said Lund. "This award was a very appropriate way to recognize Dr. Brown's contributions during her relatively short time here at Cornell," he added. Brown, who joined Cornell in 1985, was honored for her research in the area of apple breeding and for her use of both traditional and molecular research techniques. The award was also recognition of the importance of new apple varieties to New York farmers.
