Lockheed Martin awards CU $375,000 for faculty and student research

By David Brand

Lockheed Martin Corp. has named Cornell the recipient of a five-year, $375,00 research awards program. The funds will support design projects, team efforts and research by faculty and students, both at the graduate and undergraduate level.

John Hopcroft, the Joseph Silbert Dean of Engineering at Cornell, said the awards signal the forging of "deep ties" between Lockheed Martin scientists and Cornell faculty. "I am really pleased that Lockheed has placed students as a centerpiece in this plan," he said.

The Lockheed awards will provide $25,000 a year to support faculty research in computer science and electrical engineering. The support is aimed at research by non-tenured faculty.

The first recipient to be named is Srinivasan Keshav, associate professor of computer science.

The graduate awards will provide $10,000 a year to create two fellowships for graduate students in computer science and electrical engineering. The first fellow named is Yury Mulman, who is studying for his master of science degree in electrical engineering.

The undergraduate awards, which were made at a dinner hosted by Lockheed at the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, April 21, will provide $10,000 to support research projects by 20 students in their fourth semester in the College of Engineering. A further $10,000 will be provided to create an award for excellence and design in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and computer science.

The undergraduates recognized at the Lockheed reception were: David Baer, Walter Bell, Long Yin Choy and Michael Kassoff, computer science; Patricia Capote, Daniel Hang, David Lewin and David Wertheimer, operations research and industrial engineering; James Chonko, John Dubiansky, James Fogg, Margaret Middleton, Emma Purdy, Laura Sheridan, Andrew Stein and Minh Trinh, mechanical and aerospace engineering; and Antonio Cuadra, Amy Droitcour, Brian Morgan and Maheen Samad, electrical engineering.
