Patrick Gillespie, associate director of sports communications at Cornell, has been named director of athletic communications at the university, said Charles H. Moore, director of athletics. Gillespie will replace Dave Wohlhueter, who will step down from the position July 17.
In making the announcement, Moore said, "We feel extremely fortunate that we already had a person such as Pat on our staff who we could promote into this important position. He has a tremendous amount of experience in the communications field and has done an exceptional job here at Cornell, especially with designing and maintaining our athletics World Wide Web site. He is the right individual to lead our sports communications department into the 21st century."
"I'm very pleased by the opportunity that's been presented to me," Gillespie said. "Cornell has enjoyed a strong history in sports communications, and I fully expect to continue that tradition for many years to come."
Gillespie came to Cornell in 1992 as the assistant sports information director, after serving five years as the sports information director at Alfred University. In 1997, he was promoted to associate director of sports communications at Cornell. Currently he is the Cornell liaison for the USA Today Information Network.
He has also served as media coordinator for NCAA men's lacrosse playoffs and has worked as the Ivy League's volleyball liaison. Gillespie has served on the College Sports Information Directors of America Computer Committee and will serve as chairp beginning June 28.
A 1984 graduate of Edinboro University of Pennsylvania in journalism, Gillespie also has been sports information director at Gannon University in Erie, Pa.
