Osgood is named new president of Grinnell College

Russell K. Osgood, the Allan R. Tessler Dean of the Cornell Law School, has been named president of Grinnell College. The announcement was made by Grinnell College trustees May 15. Osgood will assume the presidency no later than Aug. 1.

Osgood joined Cornell Law School's faculty in 1980. He was named dean of the Law School in 1988.

"Russell Osgood has done a superb job as dean of our law school and I am confident he will be a first-rate president for Grinnell College," said President Hunter Rawlings. "Russell has a full commitment to undergraduate education and will provide strong academic leadership for Grinnell."

During his tenure, Osgood worked to strengthen the Law School's international focus, by broadening the curriculum and the scope of the Berger International Legal Studies Program and by advocating greater opportunities for faculty to teach overseas. He also was instrumental in the implementation of a new legal writing program at the Law School in response to the profession's calls to improve the writing skills of law graduates.

Osgood's commitment to increasing the school's resources to keep pace with technological advancements has put the school at the forefront of what could be called electronic legal education. The Law School's Legal Information Institute, which provides an array of legal information for the attorney, legal scholar and general public, has been recognized as a leader in providing legal information online.

The provost's office will oversee the search for Osgood's successor.
