Mainframe users asked to help test upgrade

On Sunday, May 31, Cornell's administrative IBM mainframe system will be upgraded to VM/ESA 2.2.0. With the upgrade, users can expect better service, a simplified support structure and Year 2000 compliance. The system hosts university administrative systems, including CHRISP, ADABAS and Natural.

Several Cornell-created modifications will be replaced by IBM products, including the local access control and accounting system and the Minidisk Manager. As part of the Year 2000 compliance, commands that display dates will change from 2-digit to 4-digit year format. Software to check for these commands within programs is available on the mainframe system.

Limited testing of the upgrade has been done by Network and Computing Systems (NCS) and several departmental representatives. NCS is asking mainframe users to help test the new operating system on Sunday, May 10 and 17, from 8 to 11:30 a.m. Testers should report any problems to the Network Operations Center at 255-9900.

For information on how this upgrade may affect your department, consult your department's mainframe representative.
