Karel Husa, the Kappa Alpha Professor of Music Emeritus, has received an honorary doctor of music degree from the New England Conservatory of Music. Husa, who taught at Cornell from 1954 to 1992, was honored during the conservatory's commencement ceremonies May 24 in Boston. Others receiving honorary doctorates were soprano Marilyn Horne and jazz great Benny Carter.

Stephen C. McGuire, associate professor of nuclear science and engineering, has been selected as a visiting scientist this summer at the Cold Neutron Research Facility of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), in Gaithersburg, Md. During his appointment he will collaborate with researchers from the Chemical Sciences and Technology Laboratory on investigations of light element content of nanoscale films of nickel aluminide. Results from initial Cornell studies were presented at the European Materials Research Society Meeting, Strasbourg, France, in June of 1997, in a paper co-authored by McGuire and graduate research assistant, Jarvis D. Sulcer. McGuire has been a member of the Cornell faculty since 1989.

Sarah E. Thomas, the Carl A. Kroch University Librarian at Cornell, was named by the New York State Board of Regents to the Regents Commission on Library Services. The commission will articulate a vision for library service in the next century and develop and recommend a plan for ensuring equal access to information for all New Yorkers, according to Janet M. Walsh, state librarian and assistant commissioner for libraries. Janet Steiner, director of Tompkins County Public Library, also will serve on the Regents Commission.

John O. McClain, professor of production and quantitative analysis at the Johnson Graduate School of Management, has been named president of the Manufacturing and Service Operations Management Society. With over 900 members, the society is the largest and most rapidly growing division of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS). McClain has been a member of the Cornell faculty since 1970.

William B. Ward, professor emeritus in the Department of Communication, has been honored with an Award of Excellence by Agricultural Communicators in Education, a national and international professional organization. The award was announced and presented at the organization's annual meeting in recognition of his "substantial and creative contributions to the communication/information technology profession and leadership and involvement over so many years in international activities."
