16 are elected to CU Athletic Hall of Fame

The largest class since 1988 will be inducted into the Cornell Athletic Hall of Fame at the 21st annual ceremony this fall.

Sixteen new members will be enshrined the night of Oct. 16, swelling the hall's membership to 382. Included in this year's class are representatives of 14 sports and a coach. Seven of the inductees received All-America recognition during their days with the Big Red. Four of the athletes participated in two sports.

The most familiar name in the new class is former head lacrosse coach Richie Moran, who enjoyed tremendous success during his 29-year tenure, from 1969 to 1997. Moran-coached teams won three NCAA championships and 15 Ivy crowns, with three of his squads going undefeated. From 1976 to 1978, Cornell won 42 consecutive games, which is an NCAA Division I lacrosse record. Moran, who was Division I National Coach of the Year three times was inducted into the Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1983. He retired from coaching a year ago and now is associate director of athletics for alumni affairs and development at Cornell.

One of Moran's pupils, Kevin Cook '84, heads the list of All-Americans. Cook, who transferred to Cornell from Nassau Community College, earned All-America first-team recognition as a senior after receiving second-team honors his first season with the Big Red. John Bayne '88, a two-sport athlete in soccer and track, also excelled in the classroom and received Academic All-America recognition three times.

Other All-Americans were Anne Broeder '86, who received the award twice in leading the women's polo team to three national intercollegiate championships; the late Meredith (Bud) Cushing '44, who earned United Press International honorable mention before playing in the College All-Star football game vs. the Chicago Bears; Len Oniskey '55, the school's boxing champion who was accorded Associated Press honorable mention as a senior gridder and became a seventh-round draft choice of the Washington Redskins; football and track star Paul Robeson Jr. '48, who garnered AP honorable mention on the gridiron; and Bill Bruckel '67, who received his recognition for anchoring the mile relay team to a third-place finish at the NCAA championships in a school record time of 3:08, a mark that still stands. Bruckel equaled the Olympic record of 20.3 in the 200 at the U.S. Olympic trials but just missed making the 1968 Olympic team.

In addition to Bayne, Oniskey and Robeson, Leane Sinicki '85 was a two-sport athlete, earning four letters each in field hockey and lacrosse.

Gymnastics adds its flavor to this year's class, as Dave Feeney '86, who led the men's team to three Ivy titles in four years, and Jeanne Pitts '88, an NCAA regional participant, will be inducted. The third track person in this class is Darren Roach '87, who was a four-time Heptagonal triple jump champion and set the school's existing outdoor triple jump record.

Other new inductees are Bill Bellamy '87, who earned Eastern Lightweight Football League first-team honors at three different positions; the late Mike Doran '67, who graduated as Cornell's No. 2 career points leader in men's hockey and was a member of the school's first NCAA championship team in 1967; and the late Arthur Olsen '18, considered one of the top pitchers in intercollegiate baseball before playing nine years of professional ball, including 1921-23 under manager Ty Cobb with the Detroit Tigers.

The final new inductee is Bob Gallagher '44, who earned three varsity letters in basketball in a career that was interrupted by naval duty. In 1993, Gallagher endowed the men's basketball head coaching position, and he is chairman of the Cornell Athletics Alumni Advisory Council.

In addition to being inducted Oct. 16, the honorees or their representatives will be recognized at halftime of the Cornell-Bucknell football game Oct. 17.

The Cornell Athletic Hall of Fame was initiated in 1978 and became a reality through the generosity of the late Ellis H. Robison '18, whose gift to the university resulted in the construction of the Robison Hall of Fame Room that houses Hall of Fame memorabilia in Schoellkopf Hall.
