Frederick A. Rogers, Cornell senior vice president and chief financial officer, has been named chair of the board of directors of the Council on Governmental Relations (COGR), an association of more than 135 leading research universities.
Rogers is the first Cornell member of the COGR board to serve as chair in the organization's 50-year history. His appointment, effective Aug. 1, is for one year.
"The chair sets the agenda for the group's substantive activities," said Milton Goldberg, president of COGR. "I think Fred's a good choice for the position and hope he exercises good judgment and leads us to a good year for our university members."
The association makes recommendations to federal agencies on issues that affect university research. It seeks to reduce government regulation concerning the practice of research and to streamline the procedures by which universities comply with federal laws.
"COGR is a unique vehicle to deal directly with federal policy-makers," said Rogers, who has been involved with the organization since 1993.
The COGR board of directors consists of 18 university business and research officials who serve three-year terms. They represent some of the largest public and private research universities, including the universities of California, Michigan and Wisconsin as well as Brown, Harvard and Princeton universities.
