Lester Eastman, the Given Foundation Professor of Engineering, is the recipient of the 1999 Graduate Teaching Award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. The award carries the citation "For inspirational teaching with an impact on semiconductor devices through interdisciplinary graduate education." Eastman, who joined the faculty in 1957, combines fundamental textbook knowledge with the latest research when teaching graduate courses. He is regarded in the technical community as one of the premier lecturers in the area of compound semiconductors. Indeed, he and his students invented semiconductor devices called planar-doped diodes and pioneered a process called planar doping. Eastman has supervised over 100 doctoral theses, and 16 of his former students are faculty members at various universities, and others have gone on to successful careers in industry and government.
