Grumman squash courts open to CU community

Effective this past Monday, Cornell's Grumman Squash Courts are open to all registered Cornell students, faculty and staff. No membership or court fees will be charged, said Charles H. Moore, director of athletics and physical education.

To register, prospective players must read and sign a "rules and regulations" form and a waiver and "release of liability" form. Both forms are available at the physical education office in Teagle Hall, and all executed forms will be retained by the business office in Teagle.

All Cornell students, faculty and staff must register in order to use the Grumman Squash Courts. Registered participants may bring only one non-Cornell guest at a time and must assume full responsibility in terms of both required forms for their guest. To facilitate sign-ups, the department intends to establish a web site. Courts can only be reserved -- by web site or otherwise -- by a registered participant.

"We will refund any membership fees already paid to the Cornell Squash Club for the 1999 spring term or as part of a full-year membership," Moore said. "The Cornell Squash Club, as previously organized, will be discontinued.

"The purpose of this change is to encourage the game of squash at Cornell at the highest level, consistent with the lowest possible cost," added Moore.

Hours of operation will be determined at the sole discretion of the Department of Athletics and Physical Education and will vary throughout the year, depending on the school calendar and usage of the courts. Hours of operation will be 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 to 10 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday (except during scheduled men's and women's varsity competitions and practices).
