Campus United Way campaign nears conclusion

The end and the goal are in sight. Cornell's 1999 United Way campaign draws to a close Nov. 30, and the campaign cabinet is encouraged that faculty, staff and retirees will reach the $530,000 goal. As of Tuesday, 85 percent of the goal, or $451,353, had been pledged.

Those who have not turned in pledge cards are asked to do so in the next 10 days. Pledge cards may be sent by campus mail to the United Way audit office at Toboggan Lodge. If you have lost or misplaced your pledge card, a new one may be obtained by contacting Robin Yager at 255-5711 or by e-mail at rmy1@cornell.edu.

New and additional dollars this year will be matched up to $175,000 by an anonymous donor, said Mary George Opperman, Cornell campaign chair.

"United Way of Tompkins County provides funding for more than 100 health and human-service programs that have an impact on and improve the quality of life for thousands of residents, from infants to senior citizens. This challenge grant gives us an opportunity to extend the value of individual donations to United Way," Opperman explained.

"United Way not only provides a network of services that affect the lives of our friends, family and coworkers," she said, "but it provides a way to support member agencies with just one gift."

Contributions to the United Way campus campaign account for almost one-third of the $1.75 million countywide goal set by United Way of Tompkins County. More information about United Way agencies and their programs is available at the Cornell United Way web site at www.sws.Cornell.edu/cuw/.

Even if you have decided not to make a contribution this year, campus campaign coordinators ask that your United Way pledge card be returned by Nov. 30.
