Winds concert, Sage Christmas program are week's highlights

The Cornell Wind Symphony and Chamber Winds, under the direction of conductor David Conn, with guest conductor Bastian Blomhert, presents its final concert of the semester Friday, Dec. 3, at 8 p.m. in Bailey Hall. The program features works by Vincent Persichetti and Percy Grainger, as well as selections from Mozart's Abduction From the Seraglio scored for wind octet.

Also on Sunday and Monday, Dec. 5 and 6, the Sage Chapel Choir presents its annual Christmas program at 8 p.m. in Sage Chapel. The program is a festive millennial service of lessons and carols featuring music that draws inspiration from folk songs. It alternates readings from the Bible that tell the story of the first Christmas with anthems performed by the Sage Chapel Choir and carols sung with audience participation. Readers for the Sunday performance include President Hunter Rawlings; Susan Murphy, vice president for student and academic services; and James Maas, professor of psychology. President Emeritus Frank H.T. Rhodes and Dean of Students John Ford will join the other readers to present the lessons at the Monday evening program.

Led by conductor Richard Riley with organist David Yearsley, the choir's program includes a variety of folk-song settings, including Brightest and Best, Brahms' Taublein Weiss, Nym Cooke's To Bethlehem, While Shepherds Watch'd, Sweelinck's Hodie Christus Natus Est and Masters in this Hall.

All performances are free and open to the public.
