Images by women photographers featured at museum

Ilse Bing's "Self-Portrait in Mirror" (1931) is included in the Johnson Museum exhibition "Insight: Women's Photographs From the Collection of the George Eastman House," which runs through March 7.

The works of more than 50 women photographers are celebrated in the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art exhibition titled "Insight: Women's Photographs From the Collection of the George Eastman House."

Included in the collection are images by Margaret Bourke-White, a Cornell alumna, class of 1926, who was one of Life magazine's early stars. In addition there is evocative imagery by such female pioneers in photography as Julia Margaret Cameron, Gertrude Käsebier, Berenice Abbott, Dorothea Lange and Imogen Cunningham. More contemporary photographs include the stunning "Red Slip" by Eileens Cowins and "June," a sensitive portrait by Joan Myers from her Women of a Certain Age series.

There will be a tour of the show today, Thursday, Feb. 18, at noon led by chief curator Nancy Green.

Strains of Bobby Vinton's '50s classic, "She Wore Blue Velvet" are evoked in the "Blue Gowns" installation by Beverly Semmes. The three extravagantly long trains of chiffon and crushed velvet climbing the walls and trailing along the floor of a gallery are part of the collection of Dr. Donald Rubell and his wife, Mera. Rubell is a Cornell alumnus, class of 1961. The exhibition also includes adventuresome, edgy works of the 1980s and 1990s by Ross Bleckner, the Chapman brothers, Dan Flavin, Yasumasa Morimura and others.

Both exhibitions run through March 14.

In addition the museum is hosting an Arts of China cultural festival on Saturday, Feb. 20, from 1 to 4 p.m. to highlight its extensive collection of Asian art and to mark the Chinese New Year. The event features gallery tours, music performances, refreshments and activities for children.

The Johnson Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m.--5 p.m. For information call 255-6464.
