TCAT board names officers, approves service plan

Change is in the air at Tompkins Consolidated Area Transit (TCAT). First there was the consolidation agreement and then the development of a board of directors -- made up of three representatives each for Tompkins County, the city of Ithaca and Cornell -- and now there are new officers and an approved service plan.

Last week TCAT's board of directors elected its first officers: Barbara Blanchard (member, Tompkins County Board of Representatives) as chairperson, Harold D. Craft (Cornell vice president for facilities and campus services) as vice chairperson and Tracy Farrell (member, Ithaca Common Council) as secretary/treasurer. They will be representing Tompkins County, Cornell and the city of Ithaca, respectively, and will serve in their positions through the end of 1999.

The TCAT board also adopted a new route and service plan that will go into effect this summer, wrapping up over 15 months of work by TCAT staff, their consultant (Weslin Consulting) and the public. TCAT's staff will now begin working on the steps needed to put the service into operation by Aug. 1, 1999.

Some of the changes will include increased frequency of service on several routes, Sunday service and a new route serving Enfield.

Currently, TCAT is holding public meetings in Ithaca and surrounding areas to present the proposed fare structure that is also slated to go into effect this summer.
