19th annual Sexual Health Awareness Week is Feb. 8-15
Dr. Joycelyn Elders, former surgeon general of the United States, will give the
keynote address for the 19th annual Sexual Health Awareness Week, Feb. 8-15, sponsored
by Cornell's Department of University Health Services' Clinical Volunteer Program.
Elders will speak Feb. 11 at 8 p.m. in Statler Auditorium. Tickets are free and
available at the Willard Straight Hall ticket office.
Other events for the week include:
- The fourth annual Health Fair, Tuesday, Feb. 9, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in
the Memorial Room of Willard Straight Hall, sponsored by the Clinical Volunteer
Program. More than 20 community service groups and alternative medicine
specialists as well as 15 campus organizations
will present demonstrations, information, activities, games and prizes. Co-sponsors for
the fair are the Willard Straight Hall Program Board, Student Health Alliance at
Cornell and University Health Contraception, Gynecology and Sexuality Services/Level 6.
- Monday, Feb. 8, 7 p.m., Founders Room, Anabel Taylor Hall, "Transgender
Health," Alejandro Marcel, director of the
Trans-gender Education Network at the Justice Resource Institute in Boston; sponsored
by the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Resource Center.
- Tuesday, Feb. 9, 4:15 p.m., 122 Rocke-feller Hall, "How Alternative Is
Alternative Medicine?" Andrea Parrot, associate
professor in policy analysis and management, sponsored by the Student Health Alliance.
- Wednesday, Feb. 10, 7 p.m., Art Gallery at Willard Straight, a faculty
"fireside chat" titled "Why Relationships Are
Good for Us," featuring Cynthia Hazan,
associate professor of human development, and sponsored by the Willard Straight Program Board.
- Thursday, Feb. 11, 5 p.m., Hollis E. Cornell Auditorium, Goldwin Smith Hall, Rita Ann Calvo, senior lecturer in
genetics and development, will present
"Screening Healthy Adults to Determine Whether
They Are Carriers for Recessive Genetic
Disease"; sponsored by Alpha Epsilon Delta
pre-medical honor fraternity.
- Sunday and Monday, Feb. 14 and 15, 7:30 p.m., Big Red Barn, "The Vagina
Monologues," by Eve Ensler, a staged reading presented by Cornell students, faculty
and staff is sponsored by Cornell Advocates for Rape Education. Free tickets will be
available at the Willard Straight Hall ticket
office beginning Feb. 8. This dramatic performance is one of approximately 48 taking
place around the country on Valentine's Day.
