Shefford P. Baker, assistant professor of materials science and engineering, has received a Faculty Early Career Development Program (Career) grant from the National Science Foundation. The value of the grant is $312,489 over four years.
Baker's research program will focus on understanding how the mechanical properties of thin metal films differ from those of bulk metals. Baker expects his research to lead to technological improvements in the reliability of devices that contain thin metallizations.
As part of his research, Baker is developing an educational program for undergraduate and graduate students, and for professionals and other researchers.
Baker earned his doctorate from Stanford University in 1993. He joined the Cornell faculty in 1997 from the Max-Planck-Institut für Metallforschung, Stuttgart, Germany, where he was on the scientific staff.
