Flag of achievement

Doctoral candidate in education Yvonne L. Lamar, on behalf of the Cornell Education Society, presents the African Liberation Flag to Professor James Turner, director of the Africana Studies and Research Center, in recognition of his and the center's commitment to diversity. The flag, which displays the colors red, black and green, was designed in 1914 by Marcus Garvey, in reference to an ancient African kingdom, as a symbol for the achievements of black people. The flag was presented at the beginning of a seminar by Turner on Black History Month in Kennedy Hall, Feb. 24. Charles Harrington/University Photography
