Feminist Gloria Steinem to speak at Cornell on April 22

Gloria Steinem, a leader of the feminist movement since the 1960s, will speak at Cornell Thursday, April 22, at 8 p.m. in Bailey Hall.

Her lecture topic, "Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions," is also the title of one of her books, which include Moving Beyond Words and Revolution from Within: A Book of Self-Esteem. A question-and-answer session will follow the lecture.

Tickets are available at $2 for Cornell students and $4 for the general public at the Willard Straight Hall ticket office and the Clinton House box office. The lecture is sponsored by the Cornell University Program Board, a student organization.

Steinem will sign books immediately following the lecture in Bailey.

A founder of the National Women's Political Caucus and co-founder of Ms. magazine, Steinem is one of the leading voices of modern American feminism. She is founder and president of Voters for Choice, a political action committee that supports pro-choice candidates, and she is active in trying to increase the number of women in elected and appointed office at all levels of government.

In 1993, Steinem co-produced and narrated an Emmy award-winning documentary for HBO about child abuse.

Her many honors include induction into the Women's Hall of Fame, located in Seneca Falls, N.Y., in 1993 and numerous journalism and humanitarian awards. In 1995, Parenting magazine selected her for its Lifetime Achievement Award for her work in promoting girls' self-esteem.
