Students facilitate a local donation

Students in the class Organizational Communication for Managers at the Hotel School delivered a donated cash register from the Statler Hotel to Challenge Industries May 19.

The donation marks the end of a semesterlong project in which the class provided management assistance to Challenge Industries, a nonprofit organization that offers rehabilitation and community employment services to people with disabilities in Tompkins County.

One of the class's teams worked with the Challenge Industries cafeteria in determining how the cafeteria could best be managed and make optimal use of food bank donations. Students Maria Mejia, Jackie Howell, Elizabeth Adjei and Nicole Dunbar learned that Challenge needed a newer model cash register for job training. They contacted the Statler Hotel, which donated one of its cash registers used in small businesses and restaurants.

The project was part of a class taught by Assistant Professor Betsy Stevens and was funded by Faculty Fellows in Service.
