The Cornell University Wind Ensemble, under the direction of conductor Mark Davis Scatterday, will perform Saturday, May 29, at 3 p.m. in the President's Reception Tent on the Arts Quad. The concert, which honors graduates and alumni and also marks Memorial Day weekend, is free and open to the public.
Favorite works played by the wind ensemble during the 1998-99 school year as well as traditional Cornell songs, patriotic songs and marches comprise the concert repertoire, which includes pieces by Bernstein and Sousa.
Scatterday is associate professor of music and chair of the Department of Music at Cornell as well as director of wind ensembles. David Conn, associate conductor of the wind ensemble, will assist Scatterday.
The Cornell University Chorus and Glee Club, under the baton of acting director Jeffrey Gemmell, will also perform Saturday. The two groups' Commencement-eve concert will take place in Bailey Hall at 8 p.m. Tickets are $6 in advance and $7 at the door and may be purchased through the Glee Club office: 255-3396.
The choirs will perform separately, then join forces to present a mixed-voice repertoire that includes two works by Bruckner and one by Ives as well as traditional Cornell songs. Also performing as part of the concert are the Hangovers, a subset of the glee club, and After Eight, a subset of the chorus.
Gemmell is an assistant professor at Ithaca College, where he conducts the Ithaca College Chorus. He also is the organist and choir director at Ithaca's St. John's Episcopal Church, where he leads adult and youth handbell choirs.
