Timothy Healey, Cornell professor of theoretical and applied mechanics, has been named associate dean for undergraduate programs in the College of Engineering. The three-year, half-time appointment became effective July 1.
Healey succeeds Kenneth Hover, professor of civil and environmental engineering, who will return to the faculty full time at the conclusion of his sabbatical leave.
The associate dean for undergraduate programs functions at the strategic rather than administrative level, framing the planning and actions of engineering college initiatives in the area of undergraduate education and supporting programs. One of the most prominent tasks is the welcoming and orientation of the freshman class this month.
Healey and his wife, Judy, participate in Cornell's faculty-in-residence program.
Healey obtained a B.S. in civil engineering in 1976 from the University of Missouri and an M.S. in 1977 from the University of Illinois in structural engineering. He worked as a licensed structural engineer in Los Angeles for two years, then returned to Illinois to complete his Ph.D. in mechanics and applied mathematics. In 1984 and 1985, Healey was a visiting assistant professor of mathematics at the University of Maryland. He joined the Cornell faculty in 1985. In 1993 and 1996, he won the Dean's Prize for Excellence in Teaching.
