Introducing New Members of the Faculty
To help introduce to the Cornell community the new members of the
university's faculty -- almost 60 new tenured or
tenure-track faculty members have joined Cornell since July 1, 1999 -- the
Cornell Chronicle will publish brief, new-faculty profiles
each week for the rest of the semester.
William Y. Arms
Professor, computer science
College: Engineering, Arts and Sciences
Academic focus: Special interest in digital libraries and digital publishing as
an alternative to conventional journals. Working with the Library of Congress on ways
to collect, maintain and distribute the growing mass of material being created in
digital form. Last year he was chair of the
National Science Foundation's workshop on a National Digital Library for
Undergraduate Science, Mathematics, Engineering
and Technology Education.
Previous position: Vice president, Corporation for National Research
Initiatives, Reston, Va.; vice president for
computing services, Carnegie Mellon University.
Academic background: B.A., mathematics, Balliol College, Oxford University,
1966; M.Sc., operational research, London School of Economics, 1967; and Ph.D.,
operational research, University of Sussex, 1973.
J.S. Butler
Professor, policy analysis and management
College: Human Ecology
Academic focus: Economics, specifically econometrics, with a special interest
in policy analysis. Butler has worked on labor economics, finance, macroeconomics
and related topics.
Previous position: Professor, economics, Vanderbilt University.
Academic background:B.A., economics, Rice University, 1973; M.A.,
economics, 1980; and Ph.D., economics, 1982, Cornell.
David Grusky
Professor, sociology
College: Arts and Sciences
Academic focus: As the head of a new Center for the Study of Social
Inequality that Cornell is establishing, Grusky brings
a long-standing interest in studying the structure of social inequality, with special
focus on inequalities of class, gender and race. His two books are
Social Stratification: Class, Race and Gender in
Sociological Perspective and Social Differentiation
and Social Inequality (with Donald Treiman and James Baron).
Previous position: Professor, sociology, Stanford University.

Elizabeth "Beta" Mannix
Associate professor, organizational behavior
College: Johnson Graduate School of Management
Academic focus: Her research focuses on multi-party, international and
cross-cultural negotiations and decision making;
coalition formation within teams; and power dynamics. She is the faculty director of
the Johnson School's new Center for Leadership in Dynamic Organizations.
Previous position: Associate professor, Graduate School of Business,
Columbia University.
Academic background: B.A., psychology, Roosevelt University, Chicago,
1983; and Ph.D., social and organizational psychology, University of Chicago, 1989.
Quinetta M. Roberson
Assistant professor, human resource studies
College: Industrial and Labor Relations
Academic focus: Organizational justice and diversity and recruitment.
Previous position: Ph.D., management and organization, University of
Maryland, College Park, 1999.
Academic background: B.S., finance and accounting, University of
Delaware, 1992; and MBA, finance and strategic
planning, University of Pittsburgh, 1993.
Praveen Sinha
Associate professor, accounting
College: Hotel Administration
Academic focus: Examining the role of analysts' forecasts in capital markets;
forecasting ability of financial analysts; the
properties of analysts' forecasts during regulatory events; and econometric modeling.
Previous position: Assistant professor, accounting, College of Business
Administration, University of Cincinnati.
Academic background: B.A., mathematics and psychology, Lucknow
