Perkins Prize nominations: Nominations are being sought for the James A. Perkins Prize for Interracial Understanding and Harmony, which recognizes the Cornell professor, student, administrator or program making the most significant contribution to furthering the ideal of university community, while respecting the values of racial diversity. The annual $5,000 prize will be given at a special ceremony April 5, 2000. Three criteria will be used by a faculty-administration-student committee to select the recipient: the number and diversity of students participating in a sustained level of involvement that leads to a set of accomplishments; the extent to which these accomplishments promote common values and shared community standards among diverse students; and the extent to which these accomplishments enhance the abilities of students to work with, live with and learn from individuals from a wide range of backgrounds, beliefs and cultural perspectives. Faculty, staff or students are invited to apply for the award, and members of the Cornell community are invited to submit nominations. Nomination and application forms are available at the Office of the Dean of Students, 401 Willard Straight Hall (255-6839 or 255-1115). Nominations are due Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, and completed applications are due by Friday, Feb. 25, 2000.

CCA outreach grants: The Cornell Council for the Arts (CCA) in a joint project with the Faculty Fellows in Service Programs is offering faculty grants for community outreach arts projects to be carried out in spring/fall of 2000. Applications are due in the CCA office, 341 Caldwell Hall, the week of Nov. 15. Awards will be announced in December. Cornell teaching and/or research faculty in any college or department are invited to submit proposals, which should address a need identified by the community group to be served. Proposals should include: project design; the roles of the faculty member and the students and the project's educational value; an itemized budget and the public dimension; and supporting letter(s) from the community members involved. Funding, up to $2,000, is for materials and expenses related to the project. For more information on the grant proposal, all the CCA office at 255-7274 or send e-mail to ccpa@cornell.edu.
