CTA Black Box Series presents Strindberg's Miss Julie Oct. 1-3

Karen Friberg '03 in the upcoming Black Box Series production of Miss Julie, to be performed this weekend.

The Cornell Department of Theatre, Film and Dance is presenting August Strindberg's Miss Julie as its first Black Box Series production of the 1999-2000 season this weekend, Oct. 1-3.

Strindberg's most often produced play explores the world of desire. In the midst of an evening of feverish celebrating, a wealthy man's daughter, Miss Julie, discovers her sexual desire for Jean, her father's servant. Once their fates are enmeshed, a battle begins for supremacy and survival. It is this battle, this struggle to fulfill their individual desires that interested Strindberg most.

As he writes in his preface to the play: "I find the joy of living in the fierce and ruthless battles of life, and my pleasure comes from learning something, from being taught something. That is why I have chosen for my play an unusual but instructive choice of subject that I know will offend all lovers of the conventional."

Featured in Miss Julie are students Karen Friberg '03, Irvin Johnson '00, Aimee Schultz '01, Azais Elguea '00, Kerry Huang '01 and Myriam Qureshi '00. Miss Julie is directed by Dennis Fox, a resident professional theater associate at Cornell, and choreographed by Laura Summers. Four times a year, the Black Box Series offers students valuable opportunities to assume directing, design and acting roles in small-budget projects. The series allows the Department of Theatre, Film and Dance to feature its finest young talent in an experimental environment and is made possible through the generosity of Cornell alumni Leah Shampanier Gould and Harold Gould.

Miss Julie opens Friday at 4:30 p.m., with additional performances at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Tickets are $2 and can be purchased at the CTA Box Office between 12:30 and 5:30 p.m., Monday-Friday. Call 254-ARTS for ticket information.
