The Inauguration of Hunter R. Rawlings III as President of Cornell University

We hope that you have time in your Inauguration schedule to "sample" additional aspects of Cornell by attending some of the events described here. They will take place throughout the Ithaca campus and environs on Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. For further information contact the Information and Referral Center in the lobby of Day Hall (254-INFO, 254-4636), or the Inauguration information-help desk in the Statler Hotel (255-6154).

Meet in the main lobby of the Biotechnology Building.

  • A scenic and informative tour by bus of the Cornell Plantations arboretum and botanical gardens, during peak fall color.
    9:00 a.m. (90-min. tour begins)

    The west entrance of Barton Hall (across from Statler Hall) is the bus departure and return point; the bus will leave for the Plantations at 9:00 a.m. and return at 10:30.

  • Cornell Theory Center
    11:00 a.m. (45-to-60-min. demonstration begins)
    Researchers can use the Cornell Theory Center's visualization laboratory to explore their scientific data in a three-dimensional virtual-reality environment. The demonstration will take viewers on an interactive flight into the "active pocket" of a recently discovered protein molecule.

    Meet in 653 Rhodes Hall (formerly the Engineering and Theory Center Building).

  • Carl A. Kroch Library (enter through Olin Library)
    10:45 a.m. (30-to-45-min. tour begins)
    Visitors will be guided by the library director through Carl A. Kroch Library--the most recent addition to Cornell University Library. This underground facility houses Cornell's Asia Collections and Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections.

    Meet inside the main entrance of Olin Library.

  • Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art
    10:45 a.m. (45-to-60-min. tour begins)
    The museum director will introduce visitors to the Marqusee Collection of American Medals, one of the world's most outstanding exhibits of medal sculpture. The visit also includes a behind-the-scenes tour of the museum.

  • Cornell Chimes and Chimes Museum
    10:15 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. (30-min. tour begins)
    The Cornell Chimes--the university's oldest musical instrument--are housed in McGraw Tower, the most prominent landmark on the campus. The tour includes the Chimes Museum and an opportunity to experience the most spectacular view at Cornell.

    Meet at the base of McGraw Tower (the southeast corner of the Uris Library building).

  • "The First 25 Years: An Historical Walking Tour of the Cornell Campus"
    9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. (75-min. tour begins)
    Cornell student guides will show you some of the most historic sites on the central campus. Moderate walking, with stops in several buildings--including Sage Chapel, Uris Library, and the Andrew Dickson White House.

    Meet in the lobby of Day Hall, at the Information and Referral Center desk.

  • New facilities at the College of Veterinary Medicine
    10:30 a.m. (45-min. tour begins)
    Tour guides will introduce visitors to various laboratories and teaching spaces in the world's foremost animal health center. This is the College of Veterinary Medicine's centennial year, and the year its new teaching hospital will open.

  • Laboratory for Computer Assisted Design (CAD), College of Human Ecology
    9:00 a.m. (30-min. demonstration begins)
    The computer-visualization facilities in the newly renovated CAD will be used to demonstrate teaching and research projects in interior and apparel design.

    Meet in 215 Martha Van Rensselaer Hall.

  • Early Childhood Program, College of Human Ecology
    11:00 a.m. (30-min. open house begins)
    Visit the facilities of the Early Childhood Program, which is designed to support research on children as well as nurture their development through a full day-care program. Current and recent subjects of study include childhood memory and its effects on children as courtroom witnesses, and parenting characteristics that develop children's resilience.

  • College of Agriculture and Life Sciences buildings on the Ag Quad
    11:30 a.m. and noon (30-min. tour begins)
    Student Ambassadors for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences will lead a tour of the agriculture quadrangle, which includes some of the oldest and newest buildings of Cornell's second-largest college--one of the world's most advanced facilities for teaching, research, and outreach in agriculture.

  • Mann Library's Stone Microcomputing Center

    You've no doubt heard of the information superhighway. Come see examples of the "infobahn" in academia, including large-screen demonstrations and opportunities to "drive it yourself."

  • Akwe:kon, the American Indian Program House

    The residents of Akwe:kon, Cornell's American Indian residential program house, invite you to visit their extraordinary new home.

  • Apple tasting at the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences

    Taste the results of the renowned apple-breeding program of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Sample new as well as familiar varieties, and also Cornell Orchard's famous apple cider!

  • Exhibit: "Bountiful Harvests: Fruit and Vegetable Science at Cornell"

    This exhibit illustrates the numerous advancements College of Agriculture and Life Sciences researchers have made in fruit and vegetable science.

  • Exhibit: "Drawn from Architecture"
    9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. (open period)
    Three centuries of architectural perspectives, elevations, plans sections, and details--including examples of modern computer-assisted design. This exhibit features historically important architectural drawings and prints from the collection of Judith York Newman, B.Arch. '57.

  • Seminar: "Ethical Decision Making in the Multinational Corporation"
