SPENCER T. AND ANN W. OLIN LECTURERS
The Spencer T. and Ann W. Olin Lecture has been presented duirng each annual alumni reunion weekend since 1987. The full list of lecturers follows:
- 1987:Edward Heath, former British prime minister.
- 1988:Carl Sagan, the David Duncan Professor of Astronomy and Spaces Sciences at Cornell.
- 1989:Abba Eban, former Israeli ambassador to the United Nations and the United States.
- 1990:Columnist George Will.
- 1991:Sol M. Linowitz, U.S. ambassador to the Organization of American States during the Lyndon B. Johnson administration and a 1938 graduate of the Cornell Law School.
- 1992:Theodore J. Lowi, the John L. Senior Professor of American Institutions at Cornell.
- 1993:Richard B. Cheney, U.S. secretary of defense, 1989-1993.
- 1994:Martin Fettman, M.S. '76 and '80, D.V.M. '80, the first veterinarian astronaut and a NASA payload specialist for the October 1993 Spacelab Life Sciences 2 space shuttle mission.
- 1995:Lee Teng-hui, president of Taiwan and a 1968 Ph.D. graduate in agricultural economics.
The Olin Lecture was established in 1986 by an endowment fund from the Spencer T. and Ann W. Olin Foundation. A 1921 graduate of Cornell's mechanical engineering program, Spencer T. Olin was vice president of Olin Industries. He served as chairman of the Republican National Committee from 1958 to 1960 and treasurer from 1960 to 1962. He served as a member of the Cornell Board of Trustees from 1957 to 1972 and received Cornell's medal for distinguished service in 1971. In 1972, he was elected trustee emeritus and presidential councillor, the university's highest honor.
