A stitch in time

The Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art features an exhibition, ÒThe Flowering of American Quilts,Ó through Aug. 26. Floral patterns in quilts are an important aspect of the history of quilts and the history of women. By the late 18th and early 19th centuries, botany became the most popular science for women to study in the United States. During that same period, botanical images became quite common in American quilts. This exhibition explores the use of these motifs in 13 works; it was organized by the International Quilt Study Center at the University of Nebraska.
