Fortepianist Lars Haugbro to give Mozart and Haydn concert May 12

On Sunday, May 12, fortepianist Lars Haugbro presents an evening of keyboard music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Joseph Haydn at 8 p.m. in Barnes Hall. The concert is free and open to the public.

The concert opens with two pieces by Mozart: Fantasy in D Minor, K. 397, and the Rondo in D Major, K. 485. The remainder of the program is devoted to piano sonatas by Haydn. Before intermission, Haugbro plays the Sonata in A-flat Major, Hob. XVI: 46. He then presents three more, also from Hob. XVI: Sonata in G Minor (No. 44), Sonata in D Major (No. 51) and Sonata in F Major (No. 29).

From Oslo, Norway, Haugbro made his orchestral debut with the Oslo Philharmonic in 1979 and his recital debut in 1982. That same year, he received his master of music degree from the University of Oslo. In 1984 Haugbro received the higher diploma in piano from the State Academy of Music, also in Oslo.

He has given recitals in the United States, Scandinavia, Italy, France, Russia and Spain, as a soloist, chamber musician and accompanist. Haugbro has recorded frequently for the Norwegian Broadcasting Corp. (NRK), including a series of major contemporary works by Norwegian composers.

For the past 15 years, he has taught piano at two junior colleges and the State Academy of Music in Oslo. After an accident in 1989 prevented him from using the pedals of the piano, he started to study music from the 18th century.

In 1998 Haugbro began studying the fortepiano and currently is a student of Professor Malcolm Bilson in the doctor of musical arts program at Cornell. This event marks his final concert while in residence at Cornell. In August, he will return to his teaching position in Oslo where will complete the requirements for his degree.
