College of Agriculture and Life Sciences

The Class of 2003 Degree Marshals are Stephanie Setyadi and Katharine Carlino; Class of 2003 Banner Bearers are Catherine Wood, Sarah Holtz and Noah Pollock.

The award for Academic Excellence was presented to the top scholar in each of the college's majors. The Alpha Zeta Scholarship Key Award, for last year's freshman in the college with the highest cumulative grade point average, went to Michael Dickstein.

Natalie Walleser and Benjamin Wolfe received the Richard A. Church Senior Service Award, sponsored by the ALS Alumni Association, based on voluntary activities beyond undergraduate academic requirements.

Kiran Goldman was given the Paul Schreurs Memorial Award to recognize excellence in undergraduate research and service to the community, sponsored by the college's honor society, Ho-Nun-De-Kah.

The Professor of Merit Award, voted by the senior class, went to George Hudler, professor in the Department of Plant Pathology. Also voted on by the senior class, the Donald C. Burgett Distinguished Adviser Award recipient was James Bartsch, associate professor in the Department of Biological and Environmental Engineering.

The Young Faculty Teaching Excellence Award went to Evan Cooch, assistant professor of natural resources.

The Innovative Teacher Award, for developing new approaches to instruction in undergraduate teaching, went to William Schulze, the K.L. Robinson Professor of Agricultural Economics and Public Policy in the Department of Applied Economics and Management.

The National Association of Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA) Teaching Award of Merit, for individuals who excel in teaching an agricultural discipline, went to Syed Rizvi, professor of food science.

Joe Regenstein, professor in the Department of Food Science, received the Excellence for Promoting Cultural Diversity Award, recognizing members of the CALS faculty and academic staff who have made significant contributions to enhancing a positive climate for multicultural diversity within their teaching, research and/or extension programs.

Randy Worobo, assistant professor in the Department of Food Science and Technology in Geneva, received the Excellence in Mentoring Undergraduate Students in Independent Research Award.

The Edgerton Career Teaching Award, for a faculty member who has provided outstanding teaching and advising throughout a long and continuous career in the college, was presented to Richard Root, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology.

Department of Applied Economics and Management

Melissa Cauchard and Stephanie Setyadi were chosen to receive the Cyril F. Crowe Prize, which recognizes academic performance of students in the department.

The G.F. Warren Award for Outstanding Publication or Manuscript went to Christian Vossler.

Professor William Schulze received the Innovative Teacher Award, and Professor Ravi Kanbur won the William Tomek Excellence in Faculty Research Award.

Heidi Gjertsen and Xing Zhou were named Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistants.

Department of Communication

Devan Rosen was named Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant in communication.

Matthew Nisbet and Fang Yang won the Graduate Student Anson E. Rowe Award. Kristen Haunss and Ann Hsieh won the Undergraduate Anson E. Rowe Endowment Fund.

Kristen Haunss and Bruce Hardy won the Jane Brody Journalism Award in the fall of 2002.

The Kenneth J. Bissett Award, presented to a communication major who exhibit academic excellence, creativity, sensitivity and an interest in the arts, went to Kristen Haunss.

The Thomas B. Bush Memorial Fund Award, based on academic ability, character and other relevant factors, went to seniors Bruce Hardy, Timothy Olsen and Jennifer Shaffer; juniors Diane Plavecski and Jessica Woolf; and sophomore Michele Head.

The Birge Kinne Fund Award, also based on academic ability, character and other relevant factors, went to seniors James Jackson, Julie Kluka, Bennett Steeves, Rebecca Tillemans, Michael Webb and Nina Won.

Kris Ann Brady won the Edward L. Bernays Foundation Primus Inter Pares Award to encourage leadership in the Cornell Public Relations Student Society of America.

The Sheila Turner Seed Memorial Award, a paid internship at Scholastic Inc.'s Choices magazine for junior women majoring in communication, went to Stacey Delikat.

The Chester Freeman Communication Leadership Fund Award, given to a communication junior who best exhibits the interdisciplinary character of the department's program, went to Melanie Massimo.

Amita Chugh received the William B. Ward Communication Scholarship.

Lauryn Slotnick and Katie Klein received the Women Executives in Public Relations Foundation Award.

The Alfred N. Schwartz Prize for Agricultural Journalism, for undergraduates submitting original manuscripts, went to: Philip Lane, first place; Laura Borden, second place, and Amanda Vanblarcom, third place.

The winners of the Woodford Speaking Contest, held in the fall semester, were: Colleen Lambo, CALS, first place; Douglas Hopek, A&S, second place; Katharina Russ, CALS, third place; and honorable mention went to CALS majors Muhammad Khalid, Orren Wexler and Scilla Michelucci.

Winners of this spring's Class of 1886 Memorial Speaking Contest were: Monica Schiefen, A&S, first place; Michele Head, CALS, second place; David Fisher, ILR, third place; and honorable mention went to CALS majors John Overton, Angela Parrish and Steven Reuter.

The winners of the Eastman-Rice Speaking Stage, a persuasive speaking contest in which CALS majors compete, were Matthew Janiga, first place; Melanie Fraticelli, second place; Philip Lane, third place, and honorable mention went to Amber Parker, Michael Schwartz and Joe Vongvorachoti.

Winners of the 1894 Memorial Debate Competition, a two-day, fall semester campuswide competition among undergraduates who are members of the Cornell Forensics Society, were: Lara Douglas, Pratibha Vuppuluri, Jeffrey Terkowitz, David Early, Daniel Pearlstein, Aaron Franklin, Jessica Schneider and Crystal Zell. Prizes also went to Leandro Garcia, Jacob Colin, Charles Crandall, Dustin Johnson, Jesse Knapp, Justin Schoenberg, Sandra Alvarez, Jonathan Grossberg, Lisa Wang, Mike Cross and Charles Brady.

Gretchen Poulos won the Carol J. Adomiak Communication Undergraduate Service Award.

Brian Earle was named a winner of the Kendall S. Carpenter Memorial Advising Prize.

Jill Wason and Ann Hsieh received the Baccalaureate Service Award.

Department of Crop and Soil Sciences

Ted Feldpausch won the Bradfield Award, which supports research intended to enhance the well-being of small farmers and their families in developing countries.

Brian Flannigan received the 2002 Robert B. Musgrave Award, based on exceptional performance in terms of professional contributions and/or service to the disciplines of crop and soil sciences, or to the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences.

The 2002 Harry A. McDonald Award, based on exceptional performance in terms of professional contributions and/or service to the disciplines of crop and soil sciences, or to the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences, went to Daniel Elswit.

Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology

Gary Langham received a Clark Distinguished Teaching Award, and Rebecca Safran received a CALS Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award, both given in recognition of excellence in teaching by a teaching assistant.

The Robert H. Whittaker Award, given in recognition of the best oral presentation made by a graduate student at the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Graduate Student Association's Symposium, went to Richard Phillips of the Department of Natural Resources.

The Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Book Award for the best paper given by a beginning graduate student at the Graduate Student Symposium went to James Walters.

Department of Food Science

CIFS Advisory Council Undergraduate Awards went to: Morgan Chase, Adi Dewanto, Robin Erat, Jessica Hof, Roderick Purwana, Tracy Sinnott, Julita Sudwikatmono and Grace Wang.

Katherine Meyers won the General Mills/Food Science Undergraduate Award, for academic excellence and outstanding achievement.

Katherine Meyers and Rebecca Taylor won awards from the Ruth Herzog/Albert Flegenheimer Memorial (Undergraduate) Fund. The Ruth Herzog and Albert Flegenheimer Graduate Award went to Hazel Fromm, Melissa Mundo and Nuttawee Niamsiri.

The Ruth and Henry Herzog Graduate Award, presented to students who have achieved both academic excellence and advanced in their research endeavors, went to Belgin Dogan, Haijing Hu, Kendra Nightingale, Jie Sun and Marie Yeung.

The Unilever U.S. Graduate Award, recognizing an outstanding graduate student involved in frozen desserts technology or new product development, went to Hongquan (Garth) Liang.

Chi Kong (Vincent) Yeung received the Julian C. Colyer Award, recognizing excellence in a scientific paper by a graduate student in food chemistry.

Brandon Nelson and Matthew Steven won the Germain Mocquot Award, recognizing outstanding graduate students in food science and technology who have demonstrated an original scientific idea in dairy microbiology or cheese technology and a commitment to community and professional service.

The John E. Kinsella Award went to Kafui Adom.

Soazig Delamarre and Katherine Kittel won the Kosi Award in Food Science, for a graduate student who has made exceptional scientific or technical contributions to food science and has displayed leadership qualities and societal concerns.

Sarah Valois received the Downing Graduate Student Excellence Award.

The Goya Foods Prize went to Joris Gerald Niilante Amissah.

Kraft Foods Fund Prizes went to Kristen Lahey and Leighanne Marley.

Pamela Malcoff, Katherine Meyers, Erin Ohmann and Grace Wang received Eastern Frosted Foods Association awards.

The Cornell Food Science Freshman Award went to James Bingham and Kristen Lahey, and the CALS/Corwith Memorial Scholarship went to Eva Fowler.

The following students received Institute of Food Technologists awards: Larissa Bell, Ashley Hiatt, Valerie Kasztejna, Judson Rudgers, Morgan Chase, Robin Erat, Tracy Sinnott, Katherine Meyers, Erin Ohmann, Sasitorn Chantanawarangoon, Matthew Steven and Po Sai Marie Yeung.

The following teaching awards were given: David Sue was named Outstanding Teaching Assistant, and Victoria Lappi and John Smythe were named runners-up. Professor John Brady was recognized with the Teaching Excellence Award. Janice Brown received the Circle Link Outstanding Teaching and Advising Award.

Department of Horticulture

Catherine Banning received the Walter R. Clarke Memorial Fund Award, based on character, scholastic record and other relevant factors.

Peter Grimaldi, Jonathan Hunt, Timothy Mendenko and Jennifer Vidmar received the Edwin J. Dietz Award, established to provide scholarships to students.

The Melvin B. and Helen K. Hoffman Award, based on academic ability, character and other relevant factors, were presented to Kevin Bittner, Lucy Garrison-Clauson and Alberto Stolfi.

The Frederick F. Horton Fund Award, based on academic ability, character and other relevant factors, was presented to Jennifer Vidmar.

The Alfred C. Hottes Amateur Gardening Fund Award, based on academic record, character and other relevant factors, went to Catherine Banning, Elizabeth Savory and Angela Zimmerman.

Erin Finan received the King/Douglas Scholarship, given to a woman in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences who has achieved high standing.

The Wilhelmine Lind Memorial Fund Award was given to Mia Akaogi, Julie Hughes, Beth Keitel, Lauren Nelson, Esther Pullen, Heather Root, Elizabeth Savory, Julia Ullman, Emily Vollmer, Heather Wehnau and Angela Zimmerman.

The Marvin L. Lindner Award was presented to Scott Creary, Scott Henning, Julie Hughes, Adam Lee, Andrew Sliwa, Heather Wehnau and Jessica Wells.

Elizabeth Savory received the Professor Alfred M.S. and Mrs. Alice Read Pridham Scholarship Fund Award, based on academic ability, character and other relevant factors.

Julie Hughes received the William H. Stimming Scholarship and the New York State Nursery and Landscape Association A.M.S. Pridham Award.

The New York State Flower Industries Research and Education Fund (NYSFIREF)Award was presented to Amy Bestic. She also won the American Society for Horticultural Science Outstanding Horticulture Student Award. The NYSFIREF--James W. Boodley Award was presented to Jessica Wells. The NYSFIREF--John Feldis Sr. Memorial Award was presented to Quirinus Pennings.

The NYSFIREF--John G. Seeley Award was presented to Jason Timian. The NYSFIREF--Joseph J. Yedowitz Sr. Award was presented to Peter Grimaldi.

Katrina Duttweiler received the Kenneth Post Award for academic achievement as a senior in floriculture and ornamental horticulture.

The H.R. Schenkel Sr. Memorial Fund Award, which recognizes superior academic achievement by a sophomore or junior, went to Lisa Detweiler.

The Arthur Thomas Memorial Horticulture Fund Award, given to an outstanding junior or senior student in floriculture and ornamental horticulture, was presented to Amy Bestic, Katrina Duttweiler, Lucy Garrison-Clauson, Adam Lee, Christopher Marshall, Quirinus Pennings, Elizabeth Savory, Jason Timian, Jessica Wells and Erica Wilhelm.

Josephine Alcott and Eric Hsu received the William Frederick Dreer Award, based on academic ability, character and other relevant factors.

The American Society for Horticultural Science Collegiate Scholars were Maia Beh, Amy Bestic, Lisa Detweiler, Katrina Duttweiler, Beth Keitel, Alberto Stolfi and Erica Wilhelm.

Ann Seigies received the Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award.

Based on their academic achievements, the following students have accepted membership in the national Floriculture and Ornamental Horticulture Honorary Society, Pi Alpha Xi: Amy Bestic, Alan Dandorf, Eric Hsu, Julie Hughes, Susan Inman, Quirinus Pennings, Elizabeth Savory and Jason Timian.

Department of Landscape Architecture

Paula Horrigan, associate professor of landscape architecture, received the Kaplan Family Distinguished Faculty Fellowship in Service Learning Award. She also was presented the Cornell Community and Rural Development Institute's "Community and Economic Vitality Award" last fall for fostering civic engagement through campus/community partnerships.

Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics

Scott Saracco, of the Field of Genetics and Development, and Joo-Seop Park, of the Field of Biochemistry, Molecular and Cell Biology, won the Laboratory Product Sales Graduate Student Research Award.

The following students were named College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistants: Abbie Saunders, Genetics and Development Award; and Smita Shankar, Biochemistry, Molecular and Cell Biology Award.

Department of Natural Resources

Administrative assistant Lisa Bishop Oltz, Associate Professor Mike Richmond and custodian Rae Bishop received Exceptional Service Awards.

Rainer Assé was named Outstanding Teaching Assistant for natural resources.

The 2002 CALS Outstanding Faculty and Staff Alumni Award, given by the ALS Alumni Association, went to Bruce Wilkins.

Department of Plant Breeding

The Russell R. Billings Graduate Assistantship Awards were presented to Kelvin Grant and James Frantz.

James Gethi received the Gerald O. Mott Graduate Student Award in crop science.

Ayman Diab was presented the Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award, as well as the National Association of Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture Graduate Student Teaching Award.

The New York State Seed Association Outstanding Undergraduate Award went to Julie Dawson.

Department of Rural Sociology

Rachel Ruggirello received the Olaf F. Larson Merit Award in Rural Sociology and $100, given to an outstanding junior majoring in rural sociology. Sarah Holtz received the E. Dwight Sanderson Memorial Fund and $200, given to an outstanding senior in Rural Sociology.

Kelly Dietz received the Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award.

College of Architecture, Art and Planning

Department of Architecture

The American Institute of Architects awards a medal and certificate of merit to the top-ranking graduating students. This year's Henry Adams Medal went to Aaron Zalneraitis, and the certificate of merit went to Alfred Huang.

Aaron Zalneraitis also received the Clifton Beckwith Brown Memorial Award, for the graduating student with the highest cumulative average in architectural design.

Aron Himmelfarb received the William Downing Prize, recognizing outstanding achievement in architectural design.

The Charles Goodwin Sands Memorial Medal went to Katharine Scott, Julia Foland, Aron Himmelfarb and John Miserendino.

The Alpha Rho Chi Medal, awarded to a graduating student who has shown ability for leadership, performed willing service for the school and gives promise of real, professional merit through his or her attitude and personality, went to Hilary Scruggs.

Department of Art

The Charles Goodwin Sands Memorial Medal went to Gi-Hyun Lee.

Brooke White won the John Hartell Award.

Ludmilla Aristilde received the Faculty Medal of Art, given to a member of the graduating class who has shown great promise of future achievement in the field of art.

Corey Antis and Melinda Watts received the Department of Art Distinguished Achievement Award.

Department of City and Regional Planning

The Thomas W. Mackesey Prize, awarded to a city and regional planning student who has demonstrated unusual academic competence or has significantly contributed to the intellectual advancement of fellow students, went to Joshua Abrams.

Sigrid Bergland received the John W. Reps Award.

Benjamin McCloskey, Becky Scott, Kim Wheeler, Tanya Zwahlen and Wyeth Friday won the department's Community Service Award.

The winners of the Portman Graduate Student Award were Luis Pereira, Steve McFarland, Kevin Snyder and George Homsy.

Erin Bray and Ifeyinwa Ossai received the Urban and Regional Studies Academic Achievement Award.

The Urban and Regional Studies Community Service Award went to Terrance McKinley.

Winners of the Kermit C. Parsons and Janice I. Parsons Scholarship were Ian Hegarty, undergraduate, and Frank Su, graduate.

The Robert P. Liversidge III Memorial Book Award went to Donovan Hart.

Department of Landscape Architecture

The Michael Rapuano Award went to Jeffrey Pelletier.

ASLA Award winners were: Michael Marquard and Abby Clough, certificate of honor; and Anne Marie Hallal and Lili Herrera, certificate of merit.

Erica Bowman and Jeffrey Pelletier won Faculty Awards for design excellence.

Erica Bowman and Anne Marie Hallal received E. Gordon Davis Traveling Fellowships.

College of Arts and Sciences

Degree Marshals and Banner Bearers are Y. Daniel Hue, Simon Leet, Kathleen Come, Vanessa Olbrecht and Antal Novak.

Stephen and Margery Russell Distinguished Teaching Awards went to Melissa Hines, associate professor, chemistry and chemical biology; Dennis Regan, associate professor, psychology; and John Sebastian, teaching assistant, English and medieval studies.

John M. and Emily B. Clark Distinguished Teaching Awards went to senior lecturers Frances Yufen Lee Mehta and Naomi Nakada, Asian studies, Jennifer Wissink, economics; lecturer/teaching assistant Robert Roensch, English; and teaching assistants Ayse Banu Bargu Hasturk, government, Gary Langham, ecology and evolutionary biology, and Masaki Matsubara, Asian studies.

Robert and Helen Appel Fellowships for Humanists and Social Scientists went to Charles Brittain, associate professor, classics; Ted O'Donoghue, assistant professor, economics; Amy Villarejo, associate professor, theatre, film and dance; and David Yearsley, associate professor, music.

Robert A. and Donna B. Paul Award for Excellence in Advising went to Stuart Davis, senior lecturer, English; and Walter Mebane, associate professor, government;

Department of Astronomy

The 2003 Eleanor Norton York Prize in Astronomy went to Lynn Carter.

Kristine Spekkens received the Cranson W. and Edna B. Shelley Award for Graduate Research in Astronomy. The Shelley Award for Undergraduate Research in Astronomy went to Jonathan Darvill.

Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology

The following undergraduate prizes were awarded:

The ACS Analytical Prize to Stephan Zuend. George C. Caldwell Prizes to Keith Follmar and Zuleikha Kurji. Hypercube Scholar to Peter Clark. The Harold Adlard Lovenberg Prize to Cristian Gradinaru. The following graduate prizes were awarded:

Teaching Excellence Awards to Christopher Byrne, Jamie Cohen, Marc Faggin and Kristin Price. The Howard Neal Wachter Memorial Prize to William Noid. Tunis Wentink Prize to Prabhakar Bhimalapuram, David Moore and Jonathan Schroden.

The Richard Evans Prize for Excellence in Teaching went to Daniel Lorey.

Department of English

Graduate students Gregory Brazeal and Herman Carrillo are co-winners of the Arthur Lynn Andrews Prize for fiction. Junior Laurie Brown won the undergraduate winner.

Junior Irina Privorotskaya won the George Harmon Coxe Award for her distinguished work in creative writing.

Department of German Studies

The Goethe Prize is awarded for the best essays on German literature, culture or film. In the category for graduate students, first place went to Ryan Plumley, history; second place went to Joshua Dittrich, German studies. In the category for freshmen and sophomores, two second-place winners were selected: Anastasia Poushkareva and Lindsay Wilczynski.

The Simmons Award in German, for the student who has done the "best work in German," went to freshman Chloe Layman.

Book prizes are given to outstanding students nominated by their German instructors. Books are donated to the Department of German Studies by the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany. The first Martijn Zwart Prize for Dutch Language and Culture Immersion went to Dan Nacuta and Scott Levine, to use toward travel costs to the Netherlands this summer.

Department of History of Art

Romy Silver received the Frances Sampson Fine Arts Prize.

Institute for European Studies

The following students received Luigi Einaudi Graduate Fellowships for 2003-04: Devashree Gupta, government, and Camille Robcis, history.

Recipients of Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships for 2003-04 and Summer 2003 were: Kari Davis, landscape architecture and city and regional planning; Emily Dolan, music; Karrie Koesel, government; Mary Megan McDonald, city and regional planning; Paul Milliman, history; Carissa Sims, comparative literature; Stephen Watts, government; and Robert Young, linguistics.

Anne Marie Hallal, landscape architecture, won a Manon Michels Einaudi Summer 2003 Travel Grant.

Recipients of Michele Sicca Summer 2003 Research Grants were: Valeriya Borisova Bineva, anthropology; Sean Connolly, comparative literature; Cristina Dye, Romance studies; Jennifer Duprey, Romance studies; Emily Gunzburger, architecture; Toby Loeffler, comparative literature; Judith Rosenstein, sociology; Wiebke Thormählen, music; and Mimi Yu, English.

Frederic Conger Wood Undergraduate Summer 2003 Research Fellowships went to Jason Canavan, government and German studies; Betsy Cooper, industrial and labor relations; Scott Levine, history; and Elidor Mehilli, history of architecture.

Department of Mathematics

Justin Sinz won the Harry L. Kieval Prize in Mathematics, awarded to outstanding graduating senior mathematics majors.

Department of Music

The Robbins Family Prize in Composition went to Yotam Haber and Thomas Schneller.

Brian Brooks won the Donald J. Grout Memorial Scholarship.

Ellen G. Adelson Prizes went to Eben Seaman, Matthew Testa and Levy Lorenzo.

David Kim won the Otto R. Stahl Memorial Scholarship.

Barbara Troxell Vocal Music Awards went to Jason Wang, Jennifer Bellor and Constance Dunlap.
