135th Commencement to be held this Sunday

Cornell President Hunter Rawlings will preside over the university's 135th Commencement Sunday, May 25, at 11 a.m. on Schoellkopf Field, his eighth and final commencement ceremony as Cornell's president.

Rawlings will confer degrees on some 6,000 eligible candidates, capping two days of celebratory events that include Senior Convocation, with a speech by political strategist James Carville Saturday, May 24, at noon in Barton Hall.

Approximately 3,800 students are eligible for undergraduate degrees. Receiving master's, doctoral and professional degrees will be approximately 1,580 candidates from the Graduate School, 178 from the Law School, 327 from the Johnson Graduate School of Management and 80 from the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Other Commencement Weekend events include the University Baccalaureate Service, Sunday, with the Rev. Gardner C. Taylor presenting the baccalaureate address during an interfaith service at 8:30 a.m. in Bailey Hall. The Cornell University Wind Ensemble will give a free concert Saturday at 3 p.m. on the Arts Quad. At 8 p.m. Saturday, the Cornell University Chorus and Glee Club will perform in Bailey Hall; admission is charged for this concert.

The commencement procession will assemble on the Arts Quad at 9:15 a.m.

Commencement will be held from 11 a.m. to noon and can be viewed via a live Webcast; go to Cornell's homepage at http://www.cornell.edu, where a link will be posted. The ceremony also will be broadcast live on Time-Warner TV cable Channel 16 in Tompkins County, beginning at 10 a.m., and on Ithaca radio station WHCU beginning at 11 a.m. Viewing will be available on campus in Bartels Hall, Kennedy Hall and Martha Van Rensselaer Hall.

In the event of severe weather, the ceremony may be delayed or held in two abbreviated ceremonies in Barton Hall.
