Service-learning papers sought: The Faculty-Fellows-In-Service Program, an affiliate of the Cornell Public Service Center, is calling for papers on new initiatives in service learning. The papers will describe new service-learning curricula, new service-learning models, new service-learning projects and other reports on new ways of linking the community, students and faculty in service-learning opportunities. For the purposes of these papers, service-learning is defined as an educational strategy that enhances and reinforces academic learning with practical experience while strengthening civic values, moral character and responding to community needs. All professorial and non-professorial faculty are invited to submit an abstract and a two-page description of the paper they propose by Nov. 27. A maximum of eight proposals will be chosen, and those faculty will be commissioned to write their papers and will be awarded $2,000. Papers may be co-authored by another faculty member, student, and/or community members, and co-authored papers will be awarded $3,000. For answers to questions or for more information contact Ruth Bounous at 186 Martha Van Rensselaer Hall, 255-2503. Professor-at-Large nominations: Nominations are being invited for the position of Andrew D. White Professor-at-Large to begin July 1, 1997. The aim of the program is to enliven and enrich intellectual and cultural life at Cornell. Given this objective, nominees should be persons whose achievements and talents extend beyond a single area of specialization and who are likely to attract interest from different fields and university constituencies. Recommendations from the PAL selection committee will be made to the president by the end of the spring semester for appointments to begin July 1, 1997. Dossiers should be sent to Porus Olpadwala, chair of the PAL program, 726 University Ave. by campus or regular mail, and must be received by March 13, 1997. The chair or the program's administrator, Gerri Jones, can answer questions, at 255-0832, about the nomination process and procedures and about the program. Espresso contest: The Statler Grind, a student-run espresso bar, will host the "Create Your Own Espresso Drink Contest" Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Hotel School Atrium. The contest encourages customers to submit their own drink inventions. Winners will receive an array of prizes, including a set of designer espresso cups from the Illy collection. Illycaffé is a premium Italian espresso producer and sponsor of the espresso contest. Faculty will serve as judges. The Statler Grind is an independently run, entrepreneurial operation managed by Hotel School students Sarah Neylon, Jamie Sikorski and Korissa Vagos. Statler Grind, which is open Monday through Friday, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the Statler Hall's Atrium, serves espresso, cappuccino, latte, Italian soda, frappuccino and mochaccino.
