Music from Southeast Asia, the sound of synthesizers and student soloists take the spotlight this week in offerings from the Department of Music. All events are free and open to the public.
"An Evening of Indonesian Arts," directed by Martin Hatch, associate professor of music and Asian studies, features Javanese shadow puppet theater and Javanese dance performed to an accompaniment of gongs, drums and bronze and wood xylophones. The performance is Friday, May 2, at 8:15 p.m. in Barnes Hall.
The Cornell University Wind Ensemble and Chamber Winds perform a program of works by Aaron Copland, Charles Ives, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Percy Grainger on May 3 at 8:15 p.m. in Bailey Hall. Also on the program is an original composition, Devil's Tail, by doctoral student Steven Burke. Mark Davis Scatterday and David Conn will conduct.
Vaughan Williams (Folk Song Suite) and Grainger (Suite for Symphonic Winds) are again featured, this time in a performance by the Cornell University Symphonic Band and Chamber Winds, on May 4 at 3 p.m. in Bailey Hall. Scatterday and Conn, again, will conduct.
Student performances round out the week's musical offerings. Student chamber music recitals are planned for May 4 and May 5. Both performances are at 8:15 p.m. in Barnes Hall.
Featured performers are Patricia Bolen, Ken Chan, Mona Cho, Sarah Day, Jessica Flintof, Wendy Fu, Francoise Galopin, Ray Himka, Roshan Jain, Gordon Kindlmann, Deborah Lane, Josh Lekwa, Cary Leung, Gary Lin, Rebecca Maurer, Gary Moulsdale, Scott Newbury, Kathryn Nyman, Phil Oh, Paul Osterfield, Vineet Shende, Jana Solomon, Arsenia Soto, Dipak Srinivasan, David Tang, Joshua Tuzman, Ken Wals, Edith Wu and Lydia Wu.
The sound of synthesizers will be heard May 5 at 8:15 p.m. and May 6 at 4 p.m., in 301 Lincoln Hall and 116 Lincoln Hall, respectively, as students in the course "Learning Music through Digital Technology" perform their final projects.
Senior Lea Friedman, a student in the School of Hotel Administration, will present her senior recital May 7 at 8:15 p.m. in Barnes Hall. Accompanied by Blaise Bryski on piano, Friedman will perform three lieder of Brahms, works by Samuel Barber and the aria from La Boheme, "Quando m'en vo." Friedman is a student of Judith Kellock, assistant professor of music.
