Trustees meet: The Cornell Board of Trustees is holding its first meeting of 1998 at the Cornell Medical College in New York City, today through Saturday. The full board will meet briefly in open session at 9 a.m. Saturday in the Joan and Sanford I. Weill Education Center in the medical college's Harkness Medical Research Building, 1300 York Ave. Among topics of discussion will be a report from President Hunter Rawlings. The board is expected to approve 1998-99 tuition rates for the endowed colleges. In addition, the following committees with open sessions will meet today or Friday in the Harkness Building:

Librarian appointed: Cornell University Librarian Sarah E. Thomas has announced the appointment of Jerry Caswell as associate university librarian for library information technologies, effective in March. Caswell has been assistant director for automated systems at Iowa State University library since 1990, where he was responsible for the Parks Library implementation and maintenance of the NOTIS library management system. Caswell also held positions at the universities of Vermont and Wisconsin, and at Duke University, where he helped plan and implement the networked online catalog among the Triangle Research Libraries. Caswell received a B.A. in English and classical literature from Brandeis, an M.A. in American history, an M.A. in library science and a Ph.D. in library and information science from Wisconsin.

Professors-at-large: Nominations from individual faculty members or groups of faculty are being sought for Andrew D. White Professors-at-Large. The Professors-at-Large Program brings to campus individuals who have achieved outstanding international distinction in the humanities, the natural or social sciences, or the learned professions, or who have achieved distinction and have demonstrated broad intellectual interests through their activities in such fields as public affairs, literature or the creative arts. Nomination dossiers, which should be sent to the Program for A.D. White Professors-at-Large, 726 University Ave., must be received by Friday, Feb. 27. Award nominations: The Robinson-Appel Humanitarian Award, established by alumni Gerald and Margot Robinson and Robert and Helen Appel, is designed to honor Cornell students' past and present contributions to community service. Applications and nominations currently are being sought for three awards of $1,500 each for use in community service activities. Applications and nominations are available at the Public Service Center, 200 Barnes Hall, or at the Information & Referral Center in the Day Hall lobby. Faculty and staff are invited to nominate deserving students by Friday, Feb. 13. Students will then be asked to complete the application. The application deadline is March 13. Free English classes: Registration for free English classes sponsored by Cornell Campus Club will take place Thursday, Jan. 29, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Cafe at Anabel Taylor Hall. English-language skills course: A non-credit course will be offered at Cornell for visiting academicians who seek improvement in any basic English-language skill, particularly speaking and listening comprehension. All language-learning activities will be oriented toward what will be most useful to the scholars during their stay here. Practice in speaking and pronunciation will include formal presentations and individual help with pronunciation problems. Field trips are scheduled regularly to provide opportunities for discussion with native English speakers and insight into American culture and history. This 10-week course, which meets twice a week on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 5 to 7 p.m., will begin Monday, Feb. 9, and end Wednesday, April 22. The program fee is $450. Registration must be submitted by 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4.
