Syracuse Symphony cellist will perform Jan. 24 at Barnes Hall

Syracuse Symphony cellist Heidi Hoffman will present a free concert of works by Bach, Debussy, Bartók and Alexander Zemlinsky Jan. 24 at 8 p.m. in Barnes Hall. She will be accompanied by Xak Bjerken on piano and Richard Faria on clarinet.

Hoffman will perform Bach's second Suite for Unaccompanied Cello, BWV 1008 in D Minor. Bjerken will join her for Debussy's Sonata for Cello and Piano in D Minor and for Bartók's Roumanian Folk Dances. Faria joins the duo for Austrian composer Zemlinsky's Trio for clarinet, cello, and piano in D Minor, op. 3.

Hoffman has toured the United States, South America, Europe and Japan, and she has performed with such diverse ensembles as the Tanglewood Music Center, the Pacific Northwest Ballet and the rock group Heart. Hoffman, who has studied at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and the Eastman School of Music, is a lecturer in music at Wells College and an affiliate artist at Cornell.

Bjerken, a lecturer at Cornell, is a mainstay of the Cornell music stage. This past season he made his debut at Alice Tully Hall. Faria, an assistant professor of clarinet at Ithaca College, has performed widely throughout New York, including appearances with the Skaneateles Festival Chamber Orchestra, Manhattan Chamber Orchestra and the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra.
