Face Time: Asian American Student Voices will be performed in the Center for Theatre Arts' Black Box Theatre Nov. 12-14. Performances are at 4:30 on Friday, Nov. 12, and at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 13 and 14.
The original production offers an inside look at the humor and hardships of being Asian American at Cornell, as well as honest reflections on issues of race and ethnicity in American society.
Face Time is directed by Claire Con-ceison, a graduate student in the theater studies Ph.D. program. The production originated from journals that Conceison's Freshman Writing Seminar students kept from 1993 to 1995 on their reactions to course material and their personal reflections about being Asian American. All of the monologues in the show come directly from those journals.
"The show is truly unique, both as a piece of 'theater of witness' and for its use of the black box space, and because it is the first Asian American show to be performed in the Center for Theatre Arts," Conceison said.
Featured in Face Time are students Tom Chookhare '01, Annie Hsu '01, Jonathan Kuai '03, John Lin '01, Julia Macdonald '03, Stacey Pavesi '00 and Ari Wishkoff '01.
The Saturday show will feature a post-performance discussion with the cast, director and students whose journal writings are part of the performance.
The Black Box Series offers students valuable opportunities to assume commanding directing, designing and acting roles in small-budget projects four times a year and allows the department to showcase its most talented students. The series is made possible through a gift from actor Harold Gould, A.M. '48, Ph.D. '53, and his wife, Leah Shampanier Gould, A.B. '48, A.M. '50.
Tickets for Face Time are $2 and can be purchased at the Center for Theatre Arts Box Office, Monday through Friday, 12:30 to 5:30 p.m., or at the door one hour before the performance. Call 254-ARTS for further ticket information.
