U.S. Rep. Nita M. Lowey (D-18th Dist.) was on campus April 5 to be honored for her sponsorship of federal support for the Cornell Program on Breast Cancer and Environmental Risk Factors in New York State (BCERF). In 1996 she was instrumental in obtaining a Special Grant for BCERF from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the first time the federal government funded a research-based educational program on reducing breast cancer risk. BCERF also has received funding from New York state since 1996. BCERF, based at Cornell's Center for the Environment, was established in 1995 as a statewide program to collect and analyze data on breast cancer risk factors, educate the public on reducing the risk of breast cancer and promote needed research.
