Birders flock here: Birders might well outnumber birds -- at least on Cornell 's central campus this week -- as 1,000 scientists, professors and graduate students convene through Saturday, Aug. 14, for the 117th meeting of the American Ornithologists' Union (AOU). More than 500 scientific presentations are scheduled. A complete meeting program is available from the AOU web site: http://www.fmnh.org/aou/99prog.htm. This marks the first time the AOU meeting has been held at Cornell. According to David Winkler, associate professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, "The AOU meeting is one of the most important events for anyone conducting scientific research relating to birds. Cornell University and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology are honored to be hosting the meeting of some of the best ornithological minds of our time." Sapsucker Woods Road from Route 13 to Hanshaw Road will be closed to through traffic Friday from 4:30 to 9 p.m. due to special events associated with the AOU meeting.
Shoemobile on campus: Lehigh Safety Shoes will be on campus with its shoemobile Tuesday, Aug. 24. The shoe-mobile, which provides a large selection of safety shoes, will be at the Humphreys Service Building, 201 Palm Road, from 7:30 to 11 a.m. and from noon to 3 p.m. Employees eligible to receive department reimbursement for safety shoes should use their procurement cards or an L-order when purchasing shoes. Use Lehigh Safety Shoe as the vendor. Employees going to the shoemobile may do so on work time with supervisory approval. The maximum monetary amount allowed by the employee's department should be stated on the L-order, if one is used. Questions should be referred to Environmental Health and Safety at 255-8200 or by contacting the department's personnel on duty at the shoemobile.
Student Disability Services moves: Beginning Monday, Aug. 16, Student Disability Services will be located in 424 Computing and Communications Center (CCC). The office of Student Disability Services is part of the Center for Learning and Teaching which occupies the 4th floor of the building.
