CU Council for the Arts awards project grants to students, staff members
The Cornell Council for the Arts has selected 28
Cornell students and six staff members to receive grants to
complete and present their arts projects now through the spring
semester. Proposals for 2000-01 projects by individual students
and staff will be accepted before April 30, 2000.
Numerous performances and shows, including current exhibits by two
of last year's grant winners, are scheduled over the year.
- "Circle Squared," an art installation by Aulia
Tisch, former Cornell staff member, is on view at the
Hartell Gallery in Sibley Hall through Sept. 3. Tisch's works
follow an exhibit by Carlos Rodriguez '99, whose sculptures
of Taino artifacts were displayed earlier this month.
- Julia Featheringill, a Johnson Museum staff member, has a photography exhibit currently on display at the
Clinton House Art Gallery through Aug. 31.
- Vanessa Domico and Brian Dupont, both M.F.A.
candidates in visual arts, will exhibit awarded projects in
Tjaden Gallery in September. Domico's work will be displayed
Sept. 11-17; Dupont's work will be exhibited Sept. 18-24.
Other visual arts grant recipients: Chloe Benetatos
'99, art, and MFA candidate Brian Dehart; Rebecca
Messineo '02, fine arts; Claire Topal '99, college scholar in arts
and sciences; and MFA candidate Yoko Matsuno.
- On Oct. 8, Ellen London '01, dance and history,
will perform a choreographed, interactive performance in
the Center for Theatre Arts.
Seniors Lena Magee and Tatiana Thieme also will
choreograph and perform a dance concert in the CTA Nov. 11 and
12. Spring 2000 performances will include works by Scott
Cronick '00, theatre arts; Harvey Young, a graduate student in
theatre; and Cheryl Hunt '00, dance and economics.
- Photography project grants were awarded to: Alba
Cabral '00, fine arts and psychology; Lisa Shenouda '99,
psychology; Anne Sterret '01, fine arts and art history; Frank DiMeo
and Thomas Hoebbel, staff members in University
Photography; and Keith Millman, photography lab manager in Tjaden Hall.
- Music project grants: Damon Lee and Robert
Paterson, both doctoral candidates in music composition. Lee
will compose a film score; Paterson will compose a
chamber work for performance in April 2000.
- Apparel design project grants: Amanda James '99
and Mario Roman '99, both in textiles and apparel;
Carol Young, a graduate student textiles and apparel;
Lauren Berke '01, anthropology; Elise Ferer '01, chemistry;
and Kishmere Carter, building-care staff member. Fashion
lines designed by the students will be presented in the
spring Cornell Design League Fashion show.
- Creative writing project grants: Aoife Naughton, Ph.D. candidate in comparative literature, and Kristine
Newhall, a Campus Life staff member.
- Film project grants: Kenneth Lin '99, philosophy,
and Drew Hildebrand '99, theatre, film and
dance, will collaborate on a film. Beth O'Brien '99, fine arts, plans a film
based on a narrative poem.
- Individual project grants: Louis Chugranis '00,
design and environmental analysis, and Ju-Ping Tseng,
graduate student in landscape architecture.
