Cornell History: There's no place like space
May 15, 1997
NASA astronaut Edward T. Lu '84 lifts off into space for the first time, from the Kennedy Space Center. Lu, then 34, was one of six “mission specialists” on the eight-member crew assigned to space shuttle Atlantis. It was the sixth shuttle mission to rendezvous and dock with the Russian space station Mir. The missions resupplied materials for experiments and returned samples and data to Earth. Lu went on to fly in space on three other missions.
