Cornell History: Cornell Sun publishes first paper
September 16, 1880
The Cornell Sun publishes its first issue. Originally a weekly, the Sun later incorporated and switched to a daily format, declaring itself “Ithaca’s Only Morning Newspaper.” The Ithaca Journal switched to morning publication in 1996, forcing the Sun to change its slogan and refocus on local and Cornell-related stories. The Sun remains the oldest continually independent student-run daily in the United States.
