Carlos Castillo-Chavez, professor of biomathematics and director of Cornell's Mathematical and Theoretical Biology Institute and the Cornell-Ithaca Mathematics Enrichment Program, is a recipient of the Mathematics, Science and Engineering Network (MSE) 2000 Giants in Science Award, bestowed by the Quality Education for Minorities (QEM) Network. He will be recognized at a special awards luncheon at the ninth annual national conference of the QEM/MSE Network on Feb. 12 in Washington, D.C. The award recognizes Castillo-Chavez's "outstanding contributions to mathematics and science research and teaching."


The Royal Society of New Zealand has elected Shayle R. Searle, professor emeritus of biometrics, an honorary fellow. The Royal Society is the counterpart of the National Academy of Sciences in the United States. The Royal Society bestows the fellowship on scientists who have "contributed significantly and with excellence to New Zealand science."

"Professor Searle is a world leader in the demanding field of linear and mixed models in statistics," noted the nomination support statement written by society fellows Alastair Scott, George Seber, Bryan Manly and David Vere-Jones.


"AIDS in the Southern Tier: Seven Stories," a one-hour video documentary by Marilyn Rivchin, was broadcast on PBS station WSKG-TV in January. Rivchin is a senior film lecturer in the Department of Theatre, Film and Dance. Produced by the Southern Tier AIDS Program, the video includes interviews with seven people living with HIV/AIDS in the Southern Tier region of upstate New York. A diverse group of men and women, white and African-American, gay and straight, from rural and urban backgrounds, describe coming to terms with the disease at different stages. Jim Self, a senior lecturer in dance, conducted the interviews. The video, first screened in Binghamton and at Cornell Cinema in November 1999, is distributed by Community Animation Inc., 107 E.
