Gabrielle (Abby) Sándor, a Cornell graduate student finishing her master's degree this May in the Department of Communication, has received a Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship for a year of study in England.
With the scholarship Sándor, of Manhasset, N.Y., plans to work toward a second master's degree at the Center for Russian and East European Studies at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom. At present Sándor is studying at Cornell under a Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship from the U.S. Department of Education. Her research interest is the use of propaganda, especially by democracies. After her study at Birmingham, she plans to pursue a doctorate in communication.
Upon earning the award, Sándor acknowledged the advice and assistance of Cornell faculty members William Ward, professor emeritus of international agriculture, her sponsoring Rotarian; James Shanahan, assistant professor of communication, her faculty adviser; and Carroll Glynn, associate professor of communication, and Ronald Ostman, professor of communication, her committee members.
The scholarship covers round-trip transportation, one month of intensive language training if necessary, academic fees, room and board and some educational supplies. Awards range from $10,00 to $22,000.
Applicants may not be Rotarians. Applications for 1999-2000 are available on campus from Peter McClelland, professor of economics, in 434 Uris Hall, and from Beth Fiori, interim fellowship coordinator, in 103 Barnes Hall.
