Goldman, Sachs managing director to deliver Durland Lecture April 9 at Cornell

Abby Joseph Cohen, managing director and co-chair of the Investment Policy Committee of Goldman, Sachs & Co., will deliver the 1997 Durland Lecture on Wednesday, April 9, at Cornell.

Cohen, a Cornell alumna, trustee fellow and member of the University Investment Committee, will present "The Fabulous U.S. Economy and the Corresponding Bull Market" at 4:30 p.m. in Schwartz Auditorium of Rockefeller Hall.

As managing director and co-chair of the Investment Policy Committee of Goldman, Sachs, Cohen is responsible for the firm's U.S. portfolio strategy and sits on the firm's stock selection committee. A Wall Street Journal survey of major brokerage firms found that Goldman, Sachs has provided the best-performing asset allocation recommendations over the past five years.

Prior to joining Goldman, Sachs, Cohen was managing director and chief U.S. strategist for Barclays de Zoete Wedd In., served as chief strategist for Drexel Burnham Lambert and was an economist for T. Rowe Price Associates and the Federal Reserve Board in Washington, D.C.

Cohen is vice chair of the board of governors of the Association for Investment Management and Research and recently served as chair of the board of trustees of the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts. She serves on the boards of the International Society of Financial Analysts and the New York Society of Securities Analysts and is a member of the National Association of Business Economics and the National Economists Club.

Cohen earned a bachelor's degree in economics from Cornell in 1973. She has been a member of the President's Council of Cornell Women since 1992.

Cohen has made numerous television appearances on such programs as "Wall Street Week with Louis Rukeyser" and "The Newshour with Jim Lehrer." She is oft-quoted in the financial press, including The Wall Street Journal, The Financial Times, Business Week and Fortune.

The Durland Lecture, coordinated through Cornell's Johnson Graduate School of Management, is delivered annually by a major business executive. Roy H. Park, the late chairman of Park Communications Inc., and a small group of donors initiated the lectures to honor former Cornell Treasurer Lewis H. Durland.

Past presenters include Kenneth T. Derr, chairman and chief executive officer of Chevron Corp. (1996), and Charles R. Lee, GTE Corp. chairman and chief executive officer (1993).
