Jacqueline Stluka receives Undergraduate Artist Award

Jacqueline Stluka, B.Arch. '07, is the recipient of the 2007 Cornell Undergraduate Artist Award, presented by the Cornell Council for the Arts.

Stluka was chosen for her achievements as an artist, student of architecture, filmmaker and apparel designer.

An award presentation and opening reception for Stluka's accompanying exhibition, "Metropolis Geologies and Postscript," will be held Oct. 1 at 5 p.m. at Tjaden Experimental Art Gallery in Olive Tjaden Hall.

The exhibition, which continues through Oct. 5, includes a catalog of eight sets of sample maps, footnotes and blind reliefs, completed by Stluka in May 2007 as her undergraduate thesis in architecture, under the advisorship of Andrea Lee Simitch, associate professor of architecture, and Buzz Spector, professor of art.

Stluka describes the exhibition as a catalog and documentary of exploration, in which "these 'metropolis geologies' are a venue for a proclamation of the intrinsic powers embedded in the rambling narrative of objects made strange. The filmic postscript serves as performance conducted by the architectural archeologist. By releasing the findings of the catalog in film, the work recasts the commonplace with the body language and attitude of paradoxical elements. With this exposure, the viewer may now demonstrate a deep interest in the mechanisms that animate the universe of objects."
