Student films, documentaries to be shown May 13
By Kathy Hovis
Cornell seniors Felicia Kennedy and Elizabeth Davis focused on their families for their final class filmmaking projects, which will be among a group of student films screened May 13 at Cornell Cinema.
For a documentary workshop class, Kennedy used her film to document her father's alcoholism, detailing the effects of the disease on family members. She interviewed people at Cayuga Addiction Recovery Services in Ithaca, then laced the film together using home videos and Skype interviews.
Davis, a member of the advanced filmmaking class, documented a life-changing family event -- a trip to Cambodia last winter. "When my family found out that Project Angkor (a medical mission group) would be heading to Cambodia to work in the hospital, we decided to follow my mother," Davis said. "Not only to provide assistance, but also to come together as a family."
Documentary and advanced filmmaking classes allowed students to create films for their final projects on a subject of their choice.
"I'm especially proud to have such a talented group of advanced student filmmakers creating original, serious (if dark) projects," said faculty member Marilyn Rivchin, who noted this her last year teaching at Cornell. "They've developed, directed and edited their original narrative scripts and intense documentary and experimental projects with hard work and passion."
Students whose films will be shown include Jenna Bryant '12, Colin Crilley '13, Mariela Ferrer '12, Young-Jo Kim '12, Emma Shalaway '12, Elizabeth Davis '12 and John Eckhaus '12.
Screenings begin at 7:30 p.m. May 13 at Cornell Cinema. Tickets are $4 for students and $7 for the general public.
