U.S. News ranks Cornell in top 10 for 'best value'

In its 2014 rankings, U.S. News and World Report has put Cornell in the top 10 “Great Schools at Great Prices” – a measure that accounts for a school’s academic quality and the 2012-13 net cost of attendance for a student who received the average need-based financial aid.

“The higher the quality of the program and the lower the cost, the better the deal,” according to U.S. News. Cornell was ranked ninth on its list of “best value” schools, up from 12th last year.

In addition, Cornell was ranked eighth among national universities for economic diversity, measured by the percentage of undergraduate students receiving Pell grants, up from the 10th position last year.

As in previous years, Cornell was rated highly in several categories in the U.S. News colleges and universities rankings, released online Sept. 10. The university was ranked No. 16 overall in the publication’s Best National Universities 2014 standings, down one notch from last year.

Among other rankings highlights: the Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management was again No. 10 among Undergraduate Business Programs, and Cornell’s Undergraduate Engineering Programs came in at No. 7 among doctorate-granting engineering schools, up one spot from last year. Within engineering, Cornell was ranked second in the specialty area of Engineering Science/Engineering Physics, down from first last year.

Cornell was also cited as a top school for internships – which “require or encourage students to apply what they’re learning in the classroom to work in the real world through closely supervised internships or practicums, or through cooperative education.” It was also cited for “Writing in the Disciplines,” for making writing “a priority at all levels of instruction and across the curriculum.”

U.S. News publishes a wide variety of rankings in such categories as peer assessment, faculty resources, graduation and retention, selectivity, financial resources and alumni giving, and its methodologies change slightly from year to year.

The U.S. News “Best Colleges 2014” guidebook will be available on newsstands Sept. 24.
