Ratan Tata ’59, B.Arch. ’62, chairman emeritus of India’s Tata Group, was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering as a foreign associate last week during the NAE annual meeting.

One of Cornell’s most eminent alumni and a member of the Cornell Board of Trustees, Tata, chairman of two of the largest private-sector philanthropic trusts in India, was inducted for his “outstanding contributions to industrial development in India and the world.”

Tata has been named one of the 30 most respected CEOs in the world by Barron's magazine, and the Tata Group was awarded the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy in 2007. In 2008, Cornell received a $50 million endowment from the Tata Education and Development Trust, a philanthropic entity of the Tata Group. The gift established the Tata-Cornell Initiative in Agriculture and Nutrition and the Tata Scholarship Fund for Students from India.

The Tata Group is one of India’s oldest, largest and most respected business conglomerates, operating in seven business sectors and employing around 320,000 people.
