The stars come out

The Cornell Astronomical Society organizes public viewing nights every Friday night (if skies are clear) throughout the year at Fuertes Observatory on North Campus.

Call 607-255-3557 to find out if the observatory will be open. Admission is free, and parking is available in the Appel Commons lot, across Cradit Farm Road from the observatory.

The Great War

Olin Library is featuring an exhibition through June 30 exploring the cultural and political frontiers of World War I.

“Foreign Fields: Perspectives on the Great War” examines the war’s effects from a variety of national and transnational viewpoints, with materials including diaries, letters and posters. The exhibition reveals cross-cultural exchanges that reflect the war’s broad geographical scope, including Ottoman, Canadian, Australian and Bulgarian participation.

Historic cartographic materials on view include original maps demonstrating the extent of the war’s reach.

Olin Library is open Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m.-9 p.m., Friday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m.

Protect your brand

The Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management Library and Nestlé Hotel Library sponsor a workshop, “Take Control of Your Personal Brand: Online Reputation Management 101,” June 6 at 10:30 a.m. in B11 Sage Hall.

In an age when personal and professional connections often begin with a mouse click instead of a handshake, the workshop will offer strategies and best practices to manage an online presence and avoid unintentional damage to your reputation.

Fermenting a renaissance

New York was once the leading producer of hops and beer in the United States, and the state is beginning to see a revival in hops cultivation and a boom in microbreweries.

Steve Miller, hops specialist with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Madison County, and Randy Lacey ’77, M.Eng. ’99, owner of Hopshire Farm and Brewery in Freeville, New York, will discuss the history and current developments in the industry June 6 at 10 a.m. in 160 Mann Library. Free and open to the public.

The program, “Brewing on the Horizon: A Revival of Hops and Craft Beer Production in New York State,” will include a tasting of locally produced craft beers. It is presented in conjunction with Mann Library’s summer exhibition, “For a Quart of Ale Is a Dish for the King: The Craft Beer Tradition and Its Revival in New York State,” on display through September.

Lucinda Williams concert

Singer-songwriter Lucinda Williams and her band will perform Friday, June 13, at 8 p.m. in Bailey Hall, presented by Dan Smalls Presents. Doors open at 7 p.m.; an opening act will be announced. The concert will benefit the Finger Lakes Land Trust.

Tickets for the all-ages show are $30 and $40, plus applicable service charges. Tickets are available online only at dansmallspresents.com and Baileytickets.com.

Ithaca-based promoter Dan Smalls ’92 began his career in concert promotion as a Cornell undergrad. His first show, held in Bailey Hall in 1991 with Blues Traveler and Spin Doctors, benefited the then-newly formed Finger Lakes Land Trust. In celebration of the nonprofit organization’s 25th anniversary, at least $2 from every ticket sold for the June 13 concert will be donated to the Land Trust to support its environmental preservation efforts.
