Students, faculty and administrators from Cornell Tech, Weill Cornell Medical College and Cornell University Cooperative Extension (CUCE)-New York City got into the swing of Roosevelt Island Day, a community festival, June 21.

Cathy Dove, vice president of Cornell Tech, participated in a demonstration of hands-only CPR sponsored by Weill Cornell’s Clinical and Translational Science Center and the Perelman Heart Institute. More than 100 people were trained in the life-saving technique.

CUCE-NYC 4-Hers demonstrated the “smoothie bike” – energy expended by the rider runs a blender that makes a smoothie – and presented healthy food and fitness activities, including one that taught about grains and making popcorn using a mini biofuel stove. Islanders also received Cornell Tech-branded pedometers.

“Roosevelt Island Day was a wonderful event, and the Cornell community played a big part in making it a success,” said Jane Swanson, Cornell Tech’s assistant director for government and community relations. “Roosevelt Islanders eagerly participated in our programs and demonstrations and received valuable information about how they can improve their lives through better nutrition, exercise and new technologies.”
