Book on international development has site for online dialogue

In the age of the Internet, a book doesn’t have to end on the last page. After reading “International Development: Ideas, Experience, and Prospects” (Oxford University Press), you may want to keep exploring how governments, nonprofits and institutions like Cornell pursue efforts to “invent a better world.” So the four co-editors of the book – including a Cornell professor – maintain a website, Development Ideas, with a study guide, a discussion group for practitioners in the field and links to related events.

The book, with contributions from 90 authors worldwide, explores the history and progress of development, with examples of what works and what doesn’t, and why. The website will be “open” between 2014-16 “to push some of the concepts further and challenge current (and past) thinking … and share ideas, experiences and questions from both seasoned and emerging development thinkers, practitioners, policymakers and students.”

The co-editors of the book and the website are Ravi Kanbur, Cornell’s T.H. Lee Professor of World Affairs, international professor of applied economics and management in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and professor of economics in the College of Arts and Sciences; Bruce Currie-Alder, regional director for the Middle East and North Africa, International Development Research Centre, Egypt; David M. Malone, undersecretary-general of the United Nations and rector of United Nations University, Japan; and Rohinton Medhora, president, Centre for International Governance Innovation, Canada.
